Quick Stenciled Wall

I have a few favorite spaces in my house.  The office / guest room is, of course, one of them.  The other area isn't a full space, but merely one I pass by many times a day.

The whole hallway had bothered me due to it's boring nature.  To change it, I tackled it in small sections.

First:             Crib Spring Inspiration
Second:                   Chalkboard Wall
Third:                      Fun Gallery Wall

And finally, a little bit of stenciling for huge impact.

Before:

Could it look any more boring?.  I had these frames hanging on the wall for 6 months while I waited for my sister and sister in law to send photos of their familiesThey never came, haha.  I could no longer handle the unfinished imperfection.

All it took was my stencil from Royal Designs Studio.  I've used it before on an old tv tray redo and also in my guest room closet.

After:

The whole wall only took me about an hour to do.

What a beautiful difference!  I found a beautiful mirror at our local BX for only $40.

The area still didn't look quite complete, so I opted to create my own art.  I purchased a 2 pack of 12x12 canvases from Joanns with a coupon.  I am really into green right now, so I painted the background with a blend of acrylic paint colors.  I made a stencil from a link I found online.

I used one canvas to cover up the filter/air control panel
(our houses are necessarily airtight here in Alaska, but that tightness requires some fancy air systems)

I love how the area looks now.  It has a peaceful elegance.
Do you love it as much as I do?

These pics don't do it justice since there isn't good light here and it's hard to get far enough away to get a good shot.

If you haven't used a stencil before, I highly recommend it!

I'm always amazed how the little touches can make such a huge impact; not only in my home, but in my spirit.

ABC Art

This project was inspired by some wall art I saw at Target in March.  For the ABC's, it had vowels in red and consonants in black.

I modified those colors to fit with my color scheme.

The bathroom is getting a little update, and art is part of that, of course.  There isn't a theme, but since it's the kids/guest bath, I want it to be more fun and personal.

I had bought this art when we moved in.  While very pretty, the subject felt DEPRESSING and cold to me.  Not good when it's dark and snowy for 8 months out of the year.
A change was needed.

This canvas hangs over the toilet...such a romantic spot, don't you think?

First, it was painted with 3 coats of latex paint in my favorite pale gray.  I mixed in a little plaster of paris to give it texture (chalky!) and so it would dry faster.

I used simple alphabet stencils from the hardware store and filled them in with art pens.  Pens aren't fancy, but they are quick and easy (no waiting for anything to dry...yes, I'm impatient)

It looks SO much better now in it's special place over the commode

The bathroom update reveal is coming soon

There are quite a few projects nearly done and ready for reveal, but I just have to find more time to post them.

Superman is here!

Now that I'm getting the basics down, I've found knitting to be a very soothing thing to do. It's busy work, but yet it feels calming. Just me and my needles.... I finally finished a pair of board shorts for Ephraim. They came out pretty good. There are some major flaws, but overall, I am pleased. So is he I think. Adin declared them "cool", so they must be.

Learning to Knit

I've always been interested in learning to knit. I admire the skill. It's an art. Knitting makes beautiful things, and brings the maker and wearer right back to the basics. Natural fibers, turned into clothing and household articles....handmade with love. What could be better? My friend Nicole has wanted to learn for a while now. So though I am terrified to take big leaps into things (I think I'm afraid of failure), I decided to learn to knit. Our good friend Monica kindly offered to teach us. We are trying to meet once a week for a couple of hours. We're working on a pair of board shorts for our little ones. It's not an easy beginning project, but because it uses so many different stitches and skills, hopefully we'll be proficiently knitting by the time we're through. Here's a pic...it doesn't look like much, but there's a lot of effort and work in there. What you see in solid red is the waistband. The colorway is the beginning of the pants' hips.
This is similar to what they'll look like when completed. Is Ephraim cute or what?
We're meeting at an adorable local yarn shop. It's so peaceful. We sit in cozy chairs, chatting and knitting. It's a real community thing. I love it. I hope to get really good at this. What an awesome hobby.
