Hometalk Curate Event ~ Guest Rooms

Earlier this week, I was contacted by Hometalk about my Striped Guest Room / Office.  They they loved my room makeover, and so they asked me to curate a Guest Room focused event, and of course I wouldn't think of turning down such an honor!

What makes this post even more of a treat is that this is my 500th Blog Post here at Pressing On!
********************************

I browsed Hometalk for some fabulous guest rooms and found some lovely and interesting rooms to show you all.

I've included quite a few unique spaces, with a wide range of styles...vintage to modern, and tonal white to bright prints and fabrics.

I adore so many different styles of decor myself.  While I personally trend towards romantic farmhouse, I also have touches of modern, hip and vintage in my home.  There is no one style that defines what I love and this curated event shows that.

My favorite thing about any room is when it's used in a multipurpose manner.  I don't know about you, but I don't have a huge house to have a single dedicated space for every purpose, so when a room can be used in a variety of ways, that's when I get excited.

Here at this event, I have included 3 different guest rooms that have an extra purpose (or two).  Go ahead and check out these awesome spaces and  I'd love to hear which one is your personal favorite.

Beyond my own striped room, I would choose as my favorite the guest space done by DIY Showoff with her gorgeous painted floors and amazing sitting area. ♥

I would also love it if you would consider following me on Hometalk!

Hometalk is a truly great site with good advice, beautiful inspiration and a great community of people just like you.

I hope you enjoy this event ♥

My stenciled closet makes me smile!

My husband was completely baffled when I told him I was going to stencil our guest room/office closet.  "Why?" he asks me. "Because when I walk in there, it will make me smile".  That's what it's all about.  It's the little things for me.  If going into a closet that is nothing more than a glorified catch-all (which it is, since we lack storage in this house) can make me happy, what could be better?!

Ta Da!

Are you smiling yet?  Or even better, did it make you gasp?!  (I love coming upon something that makes me gasp or say "ooooh"...those are the best kind of blog finds)

I know I gave you a little glimpse of the closet when I finished up the office, but I've been so looking forward to showing the whole thing to you.

This was my first large project with stencils.  I used the Casablanca Trellis Moroccan from Royal Designs Studio.  I got it when they had a 1/2 price Sunday sale for that specific stencil in March.  Since we were in Oklahoma at the time, I had it shipped to my sister in Washington and then we drove it back with us to Alaska (I will do nearly anything to avoid those ridiculous shipping costs...I think they wanted $29 more to get it all the way here).

I didn't get a good before picture, but just imagine builder grade white with wire shelves.  I was going to try and just paint the stencil in beige to entirely avoid painting the walls, but once I got going I realized the walls were just too dirty and dingy to get a good outcome.  I painted the walls with the beige I had on hand and then used my SW Aria Ivory for the stencil (the office walls are Aria Ivory also, so the closet really compliments the room)

It took about 1 1/2 hours to paint the base coat and then the stencil took another 5 hours to complete.

Overall, this went very smoothly.  I had to touch up the corners and the base by hand, but with the design style, it wasn't too hard (it's not perfect, but it's fine, especially for a closet)

In this corner, I didn't finish the whole design because the way the sides were connecting made it appear too busy.  Besides, once the shelves go in, you don't notice those types of details.

The hardest part of this was rehanging the stupid wire shelves (my husband kindly helped me so I wouldn't freak out, as I'm so prone to do when frustrated)

In the end, it was all worth it.

This closet holds my decorating projects and craft tools as well as my boys' dress clothes since they don't have a closet in their room.

I used the aviary prints that used to be in the kids bathroom.  They fit in perfectly here, and elevate the space to feel like a true room.

I keep my photo albums on the floor.  These are just our dating, new marriage and the first 2 years of our oldest sons life...all the rest of our pictures are sitting on my computer and I desperately need to print and catalog them.

That will be a huge project, ugh.  I wish I liked scrapbooking.

I've used a folding leaf table to have a landing place for my messes

I'm loving the new tool caddy I snagged from Decor Steals.

Yards of fabric...for those someday sewing projects

My childhood chair sits up in left hand corner.  You can see I opted not to stencil the doorway wall.  It was just too small and would have added unnecessary stress with little reward.

These beer jugs are destined for something great, I just have to figure out what.

I hope you've enjoyed seeing my closet.  It's pretty fun decorating something unexpected.

There is no end the ways you could use stencils. My Master Bedroom closet is next on the stencil project list, so stay tuned :)

Striped Office Reveal

I know you've been dying to see the new office (well, at least I know my Mom has been), so here it is!

Gorgeous right?

To remind you of where we've been, here is the before.  It was a dedicated guest room.  Since we only have guests stay with us a couple of times a year, we decided to make it more functional for us as a family
(actually, I decided...my husband just shrugged his shoulders)

I painted stripes on the walls for the biggest impact.  The longest part was taping it off, but once that's done, the rest of it went quickly.  Click here to see how I got such crisp clean lines on the walls.

We switched out the queen bed for this tufted futon.  The click clack style futon converts to full size bed.

The little lamp is so fun! I love the gray washed wood and how it casts lines on the walls. The black table is my sewing cabinet (one of these days, it will be used heavily)

You've all seen my special photo window, but here's a sneak peak at the closet I just redid (the reveal is coming, don't worry)

The kids' school computer is on this side, along with my organization/bill paying things

Fun little items from Target's Privet House line (love that stuff!)

All my pending/to do paperwork is in this pretty little galvanized box

I already had the blackout curtains for our 24 hours of summer sun (they're short because of our baseboard heaters...safety first!).  The little chalkboard paint box holds all of our files.

You can see how well my vintage/industrial style light fits in with the room

Those cows just make me swoon every time I walk in here. Aren't they soulful?

For the nitty gritty details.
This whole room cost me about $450 to redo, including the futon.  I sold the old bed for $300, so I came out pretty good for such a significant change.
Wood washed lamp - Zulily
Bamboo Rug - Wuslu (now Decor Steals)
Cow Art - Antique Farmhouse
Futon - Sears
Desk accessories - Target
Pinboard and ottoman/side table - Kohls

The walls are striped with SW Aria Ivory and Valspars Elephant (the BEST greige I've ever seen).
So, what do you think?  I'm so please with how the whole room came out.  Out of my whole house, this room is the most ME.  It embodies my personality I think.  The room came out a little vintage, a little modern, a little country, a little romantic.  Bliss!
