Rustic Wall Art for boys

My boys' room is nearly done, so I'm going to begin with one of the wall projects I did.

I bought a pack of wooden garden stakes from Lowes.  I think it was around $9, but I can't remember.  We don't have scrap wood around this house since we haven't been here long enough, so I had to create some scraps :)

I had my Father in law and husband just roughly cut off the sharp stake portion since I didn't want them all the same size.

As you can see, my kids had fun with the scraps.

I laid out the boards and stapled them together on the backBecause the staples were kind of puny, I hot glued some scraps from some excess mini-blind slats (more on those later) to stabilize the boards and keep the piece from bending.

I painted them black and used a stencil to write a Bible verse that stretched across both pieces.  When it was done, I roughly sanded both pieces.  To make a hanger, I stapled jute string to the back.

I chose a verse that would represent bravery for my boys.  I want them to know where their hope and "heart" comes from.  The theme for the room is military focused (mainly World War I and World War II) and this verse felt applicable.

"Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go." Joshua 1:9

Ummm, please don't judge the quality of the art.  Fitting some of those words in was a real challenge.  After working and trying to fix it numerous times, I finally gave up and declared it was "good enough".

My boys all love it and that's all I can ask for.

They hang at the top of the stairs leading into their bedroom as a reminder
More to come in the next few days.  I want to get the whole room revealed before we leave for Washington next week.

  1. That's a great idea using the stakes, the signs are terrific. The off cuts look a little like flowers I think you could use them
