My nest project

This little project is why I've been on the hunt for Citra Solv (and for tons more like it).  However, the Citra Solv is no where to be found here in AK and I was tired of waiting, so I forged ahead.

Don't ya like my professional workspace?
I started with a wrapped 10x10 canvas from Joanns.
Plan A:  To use the citra solv to transfer my "Nest" image straight onto the canvas, but that wasn't working out.
Plan B: Using freezer paper to print the image into burlap for more texture.  But the nappy burlap jammed my inkjet...3 times

Plan C: Print onto some thin fabric I had for lining drapes - That worked out okay
First I wrapped the canvas with burlap.  Wish I was a perfectionist people, but I'm not. I hot glued the burlap to the back of the canvas.  The corners are not folded nearly as neatly as they should have been (mental note, plan ahead for these things so you know how to cut and fold the corners!)

Then I hot glued the printed fabric onto the burlap.  Unfortunately, the glue showed through :(

Next I scrounged up some old trim (actually it was the wrapping from a set of sheets I got years ago, I tend to save thing like that)
I used it to cover up the edges where the glue showed through.
It really felt like it needed a little special touch.  I thought about doing fabric rosettes, but the thought of "flipping and wrapping" 4 teeny rosettes sounded SO unappealing at the time.  So I made "rosettes" for the corners by making with cotton yarn.  I worked hard at those rosettes, can't you tell?  What technique I have!!!

This did not turn out AT ALL like I've been planning, but overall, I think it came out okay.  If I end up finding citra solv, I could pull the whole thing apart and start over with my original plan, but she has a special flawed beauty, so I think I'll keep her!  For now.

I'm still working on a location for it, so I'll be back soon with pics of her nesting place

  3. I love that you wrapped a canvas in burlap and used twill tape from another time! Today I found you from Freckled Laundry and was looking through your other posts - fun fun fun! Your favorite Fairbanks pillow is really wonderful - did you make that as well? Is it a military something? Good wishes to you in your Alaskan adventure!

  6. I just found you today...what a great site. I love your little nest/burlap project. Actually, I have seen that particular dictionary quote before, but cannot seem to find it anywhere. Where did you find it? Thanks.

  7. Thanks for the compliments!

Vicki, a talented lady in Washington makes pillows like this locally and she made it for me. That is the geographical location of Fairbanks :)

Becky, you know, I need to look into that. Amazon is pretty sketchy with shipping a lot of things (cleaners, food, diapers, etc...) here, but I will check into it since it seems I can't get it here.

Debby, I bought the graphic from an Etsy seller for $3.50. She just emailed it to me, so I can use it as many times as I want :) She's on vacation now, but there are other sellers that do this too.

  8. That Nest image is gorgeous. Isn't that frustrating about the CitraSolv. Grrrrr. I haven't got a clue what it is either!!

I like the look you've got going on here though. It fits in with the whole look if the sign, I think.

  11. First I think it turned out adorable, but more importantly I appreciate your perseverance and your willingness to post about the fact that it didn't turn out exactly like you wanted. We so often see these beautiful projects online and I appreciate more the "real projects" and reading that others have mishaps or create things that don't turn out perfect. So thanks for being real and thanks for sharing with us on Inspiration Friday At The Picket Fence

  14. Isn't it strange how projects just seem to take on a life of their own. They don't really run as planned. I really like your nest picture you made - love the little curls of string at the corners which nicely finish it off.

  20. It looks awesome! I made a pillow with the "nest" saying also using my printer. It's a fun project but can be frustrating when it jams your printer.
