The Fiddler ~ A book review

I love to read. This year, I'm keeping a list of what I'm reading and also will be doing book reviews here on my blog.

The newest book by Beverly Lewis is The Fiddler

Synopsis:  Amelia "Amy" DeVries, a 24-year-old violinist, is disillusioned with life and love after the collapse of her long-running romance. Weary of endless rehearsals and performances, Amy sets out on a road trip through the Pennsylvania mountains. She leaves her cell phone behind so life's demands can't intrude on her solitude. She doesn't know, nor care, where she will end up.

When her car breaks down deep in the mountains, Amy realizes the flaw in her "no cell phone" plan. She abandons her car and walks the winding roads, searching for help. Following the smell of woodsmoke and the sound of music, she finds a rustic log cabin. There she meets a young Amishman--and through him a community--that will change her life forever.

My review: I love Beverly Lewis and because of her, I've developed a fascination with the Amish culture.   In The Fiddler, I liked both of the main characters, Amelia and Michael, and really appreciated their strong faith.  Neither one of them struggled with God's love, and used their faith to help others in their life.  I liked that there was contact with Katie Lapp's family from a previous seriesI was happy that this book finished the story without leaving you hanging on until the next book comes out.  I loved the ending.

As much as I enjoy Beverly Lewis' writing, this particular book wasn't my favorite.  I had a hard time getting into the story, and I struggled to understand the family dynamics throughout the book, both the English and Amish.

The person I was most interested in throughout the book was a young Amish girl named Joanna, and from what I understand the next installment in the series is based on her, so I am still very excited to continue reading about these folks in Hickory Hollow.  Hopefully I'll be reviewing The Bridesmaid sometime in September or October!

In exchange for my honest review, I received a copy of the book from Bethany House.

  1. So I have the saying"bloom where you are planted" hanging above my kitchen sink and I am having a ton of trouble with it, Unlike you, I just moved FROM Alaska and my new home seems unwelcoming. Weird huh? I miss alaska every day and really want to go back. I wish I'd started blogging when I lived there. Oh the pictures I could have taken! I'm really excited to read your blog as I think I can relate to it already.
