Making Cleaning Pretty

I'm really missing my house now that we've been on "vacation" for over a month.  I'm feeling the itch to create, rearrange and even to CLEAN!  All I have to do around this apartment is the basics...dust, mop, and do the dishes and laundry.  But I love to clean and rearrange a room to make it feel fresh and new.

This fun project was done before we left for our trip, so I'm going to share it with you now.
I make most of my own cleaners.  This spray bottle contains my all-purpose cleaner.  I use it on my floors, cabinets and counters.  It is my main cleaner besides my window and mirror spray.  The ingredients are:
1 Squirt of Dr Bronners Peppermint soap
20 drop of Tea Tree Oil
Water

That's it.  I have a simple, yummy smelling spray that cleans and disinfects.
I decided that there is no reason to have the cleaners sitting out on the counter and not look pretty, so I set about changing that.

BEFORE:

AFTER:

Cool huh?  Here's how I did it.

With a foam brush, paint a coat of decoupage over the bottle

Place your chosen cut out fabric over the wet decoupage
Hot glue the matching grosgrain ribbon onto the appropriate places to cover edges

Paint 3 coats of decoupage over fabric and ribbon to seal and create a waterproof coating

For the finishing touch on my cleaning space, I bought an affordable cake stand and placed it next to my sink covered with a gingham cloth.

I love the way it turned out.  One more way to make the little things just a little more fun.  I love "dressing my nest"

  1. I'm thinking you are a super Mom who makes her own cleaners and then decorates the bottles which handling a husband and 5 kids, no easy feat. I posted about you on my blog and your Primal diet did you see that?

  2. I recently started using homemade cleaning products and was wondering how I could make the containers interesting.

    Thanks for the tutorial.

  4. What a great idea! My son can never find the cleaner I want him to use (glass, all purpose, wood). If I do fabric and label them, no excuse! And they're pretty, too.
