"Out of Many, One"....Happy 4th!

Independence Day is my favorite holiday.  I love everything about it.  This is the day when I most miss my sister and her family since this was our special holiday of just pure enjoyment.  3 years ago we were celebrating the 4th in our beautiful new house in Washington.  How different life was then, we had no idea how it would change.
My husband had to work today, but the kids and I had a fantastic dinner with some new friends.  We'll be enjoying some Apple Pie and vanilla ice cream with their Daddy tonight.  Yummm!

Anyway, last night I ran across the thrift store on base (how have I never been there before?!).  I found pajamas, 2 dresses and a Christmas dress for Lydia for cheap!  My favorite find was this pretty handmade piece of the US Great Seal with the words E Pluribus Unum "Out of Many, One".  America the melting pot.  Love it.

There's some damage to the frame, but nothing that paint won't cover
It was only $1.  Seriously.  Someone put so much time into making such a lovely work of art and I feel honored to have it in my home.

These candlesticks were found at a yard sale earlier this summer for $1. They're very heavy and have a great sturdy feel to them.  I just love their shape and curves.  I've kept them waiting in my garage until I found inspiration...and this piece brought it to me.

I painted them all with Old White ASCP.  Then followed with a coat of French Linen ASCP.  I think the French Linen is such a stunning color.  I'm so happy it's the one I chose when I ordered.

I wasn't striving for perfection, but a bit of an old patina.  I didn't seal or wax it so that later I can easily distress it to reveal the bronze color if I want to change it up.
I love how it came out!

The detail on the embroidery is gorgeous and so well done!  I love the vibrant colors.  I wish I could create such a beautiful work of art.

It doesn't have a permanent spot in the house yet, but for this holiday it will sit in a place of prominence.

Happy 4th of July.  Happy Birthday America!

  1. Miss Lydia is so darling in her outfit. Nice find you have there at the local store. Love the family portrait. Have you ever considered taking out word verification? Blogger catches all the spam anyway and you check on it from time to time and delete. Nan

  2. Thank you Nan!

I had no idea word verification was on! I thought I'd turned it off over a year ago, so thank you for bringing it to my attention. I apologize for the hassle.

  6. Those are great finds! And your paint job just spruced them right up. I love yard sales too! So many treasures to uncover and upcycle. One of my favorite sites for yardsaling is http://www.yardsalesearch.com. It creates a map for the local sales, which saves me so much time!
